Spurs are closing in on a £5million agreement with Manchester City for the striker, 28, after his 18 goals on loan at White Hart Lane last season.
Adebayor is available for a cut-price fee as he only has a year left on his deal and is not wanted by City boss Roberto Mancini.
Spurs now just need to agree a package to cover most of Adebayor’s £170,000-a-week wages at City and a signing-on fee.
Adebayor is seen as a key player for new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas — and his move will also pave the way for City to bid for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.
Rafael van der Vaart says he is likely to stay at Tottenham — despite interest from Germans Hamburg and Schalke.
He said: “It’s unbelievable how my name is speculated around Europe. I’ll probably stay at Spurs.”
